      Configuration Modifications

      Post World War II Modifications: The after bank of torpedo tubes was replaced by an additional quad 40 mm mount. And subsequently all 40 mm and 20 mm guns were replaced by six 3-inch guns (2 twin and 2 single) and the mast was replaced with a tripod mast to support heavier radar antennas.

      FRAM I Modification: 78 Gearing Class Destroyers underwent extensive modernization in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program. The GURKE FRAM I modification was accomplished during the period July 1963 to May 1964. The "B" 5-inch/38 cal gun, all 3-inch guns and all torpedoes tubes were removed and replaced with one ASROC 8-tube launcher and 2 triple torpedo launchers (Mk 32). In addition new electronic equipment was installed, machinery was overhauled, and living and working quarters were rehabilitated. The Compliment in this configuration is 274 (14 officers, 260 enlisted men).
