Name: Marvin Blue
Where are you from?: Oklahoma City, OK
Years aboard Gurke: 57-60
Comments: I boarded the GURKE as a seaman in 1957, a 18 year old naive kid from a small town in Southwestern
Oklahoma. Departed as a Yeoman 2nd Class in 1960. Started in the lst Div., during deck work, mess cook and finally in the
ships office. Being in the ships office gave me an opportunity to know many of my shipmates. There were more good days than
bad days and I would not trade my three and half years experience for anything. Made three trips to WESTPAC and one to
South America. Even extended my contract for 30 days in order to remain on the GURKE for my last cruise.

Name: Patty Fiedler Becker
Where are you from?: Crystal, ND
Years aboard Gurke: None
Comments: I am the neice of Henry Gurke. My daughter, 2 LT. Jennifer Erlendson had the honor of placing a memorial wreath
on Henry's grave this memorial day (1999). My mother, Henry's sister Edith, was the oldest in their family and often talked of
Henry and the events of his death. I have 5 brothers & 5 sisters. One of the twin brothers was named after Henry and is still
active in the gaurds and spends time in Europe every other year. This year he will go to Germany.
Much of the history of heros such as Henry, become dimmed by time and distanced by years between major wars. Many of
the young do not know that a much decorated hero once lived in their community.
