Comments: Hi all: I was on DD 805 Chevalier 1965/66/67. our desron included Chevalier, Dale, Black, Gurke and cruiser Chicago. we left for west pac with CVA64 Constellation and returned withCVA 34 Oriskany after her fire in 1966. Good page. Thanks John K. Sequeirs.

Comments: My father, Calvin George Norcutt, was a plank owner and part of the commissioning crew. I'm sorry to say that Dad passed away about a year and a half ago. I served 4 years on the USS WESTCHESTER COUNTY LST-1167) during the Viet Nam Conflict and ran into the USS GURKE while in Hong Kong in early 1970. I have a fairly good broadside picture of the ship. Comments: I didn't serve aboard the Gurke. I served aboard USS Buchanan (DDG-14) as an OS3, 1977-80. Comments: Wow! What a nice web site. So many familiar names. Came on board as ETR3 to take over SPS-29C duties from B Wyderco. Remember Ken Briar, Gary Sampson, Al Palermo, Sandy Gant, Mike Elliott, Steve Nigherbon, Larry ?, "Pete" Peterson, Wathen, Czapala, Waldrop and Marples. And who could forget Howard Krech. Good old Howie. Left as an ET1. All the memories. Sasebo, Japan, Hong Kong (2weeks?), Captain "Crunch", the Saigon River trip, Hawaii, the barbecue cookout tied up to another destroyer in the Tonkin Gulf on water that was a smooth as glass, the Middie cruise to S.F. & Seattle. They all seem good when you look back 30 years.

Comments: The Gurke was undoubtedly the finest ship in the U.S. Navy. I had the honor to be the last Chief Engineer to the good ship Gurke and honored the request of the engineering department to leave the gold "E" on the stack, even though decommissioning instructions required the painting over of all awards. The crew of Gurke was the finest collection of true professionals that I have ever served with, and the lessons I learned "steaming" with them have served me well in every job I've had since then. I am now the Director of Engineering for a Healthcare Network in Austin and would love to be able to reassemble my department in this job. Their teamwork, dedication, cooperation and understanding of the "right" way to work was magical. The ship is gone, the memories remain.
