Comments: My father served aboard the USS Gurke. His time in the military was one of great importance to him, and he was always proud of his service to country. We have been regaled over the years with stories of the ship, and of navy life in general. He now tells these same stories to our children. Our oldest son has developed an interest in joining the USN, partly a tribute to his grandfather, and all of you who have given of yourselves to serve our country. Thanks!

Comments: Excellent idea to start this site! I see in the Log a lot of my ol' shipmates [you notice I avoid the word 'old']. I still remember the rolling decks and beautiful sunsets. Any bad memories… nope! Mid-watch was wonderful - that next morning headache was a sign of maturity! Met a wonderful woman while serving on board, and we had three wonderful children. I went on to complete 20 years in the Reserves. Those days seem like a long time ago, but the memory was only yesterday… see ya'll at the reunion.

Comments: I came on board the USS Gurke when she was commissioned at the navy yard in Bremmerton WA.After her shakedown we went to the south pacific. Comments: Nice job on this web site. I just finished watching the Cain Mutiny before logging onto my computer to check email. On a whim I typed in a search for the "U.S.S Gurke." I was shocked to see a picture of myself at 19. Although, I must confess, I needed my glasses to pick myself out in the picture. I recall our task force going to Korea when the N. Koreans seized the U.S.S Pueblo. Was this assignment left out intentionally or was it omitted due to oversight? Thanks for putting all of this together it was a joy to find. Comments: I was part of the original crew that put the Gurke in commission at Todd Shipyard in Seattle. One of the things that sticks in my memory is that one of the first tasks the electrical crew undertook was to clean the engine room main switchboards with rubbing compound and give them two highly polished coats of Simonize car polish. When I left the ship in June of '46 we still had the best looking switchboards in the fleet. The most interesting part of that first cruise to the Western Pacific were the times we were given liberty while we were at the Southern Ryukyu Islands of Miyako Shima and Ishagaki Jima repatriating Japanese soldiers stranded at the end of the war.
