All of you Snipes of the Golden "E" I bid you my best wishes and hope that you
will try to attend the party in April. I came aboard the Gurke in March of 1973
and did not leave until two years later. It was my best ture of duty. I miss all the
ports of call from Pusan Korea to Brisbane Australia and all ports and
friendships in between. I would like to find a 2nd class deck ape who went by the
name of "Chicken Man", a sailor with a fishy tatoo, and a snipe by the name of
Jimmy Northcut, hope youll both be around for the party. I would also like to
remember a friend who was special to the "Golden Crew", a snipe who became
sailor of the year and then was lost to us in a motorcycle accident, Rocky
Franfelder. To the crews that came before mine, I would like to thank you for
taking care of and handing over to us the finest ship that one could serve on. To
you who walked across her brow for the last time she is not gone so long as we
remember. PS Charles Carp, Remember you were a BT before you were a EM.

Years aboard Gurke: 1945-1946
Comments: My name is Dan Ponder, and I'm entering this for my grandfather, Luther
Ponder Jr. Growing up I heard stories of his time aboard the U.S.S. Gurke, which
was his first duty station out of basic. My grandfather transferred off the ship
when Admiral Byrd (spelling?) took the Gurke on an expeditionary mission to
the North Pole. My grandparents had recently married and had my uncle, so
he didn't want to be stuck in the North Pole for who know's how long. My
grandfather worked in the engine room, and fresh water condensor. I
apologize if my knowledge of the ship is lacking, I mean no disrespect. I
showed the photo of the Gurke passing by Alcatraz Island. He got pretty
excited and believes he was aboard ship when it was taken. Should anyone
remember my grandfather, please feel free to contact me at my e-mail
address dnponder@downeyca.org
