Years aboard Gurke: 1971-1974
Comments: Reported aboarded Oct.71, swapped duty w/another elec. so I could be forward
deployed w/Desron 15. Came from DD727 DeHaven. Had one Wespac w/DD727. The Gurke was a much better ship, the elec. cables even still had the cable
markers on them. Being home ported out of Yoko was great compared to being
in Long Beach where I just took other peoples duty because I wasn't old
enough to drink in Calif. Loved it so much overseas I took the rest of my R&R
in the PI & Taiwan. Thanks to Steve Brodell for telling me about this site.

Comments:
I reported aboard directly from ET school in Treasure Island. I regret having
lost contact with my shipmates. Some that I remember are Baker Abernathy,
Sonarmen Adams & Downey, Radioman Benkie, and Electronic Technician
Strikers Leach, Joe Kurzwig & Herbert Nutt. In '47 & '48 the Gurke
participated in fleet manuvers off the Johnston Islands near Hawai, 9 months
patroling Kyusu Island area of Japan out of Sasebo, a trip to let our paymaster
pay troops in Korea, a few days in Tsingtao China to provide R&R for Seventh
Calvary troops, a trip to Wrangel Alaska to help them celebrate the fiftieth
aniversary of the gold rush, etc. .

Comments: Do you know any links about the name 'gurke' in America. Maybe it's the
wrong place to search for family-history, but a try, sorry! It's a real good
website! Thank you, all the best to you. Christoph Gerke / Gurke

Comments: I remember my dads time aboard this ship like it was yesterday. I lost him to
cancer but I know that he will always be with me and all of the guys he served
with. If anyone remembers him or have pictures of him please email me. I don't
have much to remember him by but I do remember he was on board this ship. He
retired as Master Chief

for those who remember--Im the guy who played the Bagpipes coming into port.
This ship was a good ship but a real zoo in some respects.
