Years aboard Gurke: 1966-1968
Comments: I reported aboard Gurke in Hong Kong, 1966, as a brand-new, green Ensign.
After some hot times with the snipes in B Division, I moved to WG Division
as the Gunnery Officer and made the 67-68 WestPac deployment. Great memories
of a great ship with a great bunch of people. And now a great web site . . .
the Gurke tradition still lives!
My wife, Lucy, and I now live in a (mostly) empty nest in historic
Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Comments: I was a DER sailor. Spent 22 years in the US Navy and loved it. Until they changed it so much I had to get out.

Years aboard Gurke: Did not serve
Comments: My father, CMR Edwin M. Rosenberg, was commanding officer in 1950s.
He went on to have a great naval career and his greatest love was the Navy
and the ships he served on. His fight with cancer is noted in your web page.
Though he passed in 1982, he never gave up on a challenge and continued a
lifelong passion in education and helping those in need. He spoke of the
Gurke often and I was pleasantly surprised to find such an active group of
Gurke sailors. Any stories or memories of that time would be most
appreciated.

Comments: My dad is Hubert Cline and he served aboard the Gurke from 1951-1954.
We have been searching for information about the Gurke for several years.
About three years ago I called Washington and found a picture of the Gurke
which my sister and I had framed for our dad for Christmas. I'll never forget
the look on his face when he saw that picture. We love to listen to the stories
he tells us about his time on this ship. He has instilled in us a deep sense of
pride for the Gurke and the men who served on her. This website is
wonderful. I would like to talk with anyone who can tell me a little more
about my dad and his time on the Gurke or anyone who has pictures during
this time. God bless all of you and hope to hear from someone soon.

did. I don't have a computer yet but the e-mail address is my daughters and she
will make sure I get any messages. Looking forward to the reunion in
Baltimore.

Comments: My father is Hubert Cline. I believed he served from '51-'54 during Korea.
About three years ago, my sister and I began looking for any info about the
ship and this web site helped us so much. He even attended the '99 reunion.
It was the best gift we have ever given him. I was just wondering if any his
shipmates might have photos aboard ship that might include him or maybe
even a story to tell. I'm trying to organize a project for his Christmas gift this
year. Feel free to call me at (304) 633-6698 or e-mail me. I would be more
than willing to pay for any negatives of photos that would need to be made.
Thanks, Tara

Comments: I will never forget the time I served aboard the Gurke and the people I
worked with. I really appreciate the time and effort George Cooper put into
his write up of USS Gurke deployments during his time on board. I became a
member of the crew just before we deployed to Yokosuka and was in CIC
during the operations of the Coast of Vietnam and during the excursion to the
Indian Ocean. Mr. Cooper, Thank you very much! I would like to hear from the Radar/Operation Specialists that served
during that time.
