Years aboard Gurke: 1961 Thru 1962
Comments: I served on the USS Gurke from 1961 thru Dec. 1962 as a Machine Repairman
2nd class E-5 under Cmd. Richard Kipe when the ship participated in the atomic
bomb tests at Christmas Islands (Operation Dominic). I also remember that the
USS Gurke was called on to sink a derelict guano carrier ( A high floating
burned out hulk), using one(1) torpedo as "quoted" in the San Diego
newspaper. But the best of times were shared with Gary (King Montie
Montana) Zurschmit, Jim Lang and "Sweet Billie" Southard as we were
threatened, pushed and lead by MM/Chief Hicks. In closing I'd just like to say
that the USS Gurke was my last duty assignment before being discharged, and
the one most remembered due to the fine crew I had to serve with. Anyone who
served at this time I'd like to hear from. "Good Luck to all crewmen of the USS
Gurke DD 783"

Years aboard Gurke: 1964-1967
Comments: After service on the Gurke I transfered to the USS Bausell DD-845 until
leaving the Navy in Oct of 1969. After a brief stint back home in Washington
DC I returned to my favorite "home base", San Diego. I raised two daughters
there and moved to Palm Springs in 1989. I have been in the Real Estate
business since and love the desert. I keep in touch with one or two of my mates
from the Gurke and would like to hook up with more. Put me on your
newsletter list and keep me informed concerning any reunions in the future.

Comments: Although I never served aboard the USS Gurke, I am very excited about
visiting the web site. My grandfather served aboard the ship during the
Korean War. Currently I am serving in USMC, stationed aboard MCAS
Beaufort SC. It was a great experience to see photos of my grandfather
serving his country and I thank the individuals that have put all the time and
effort into this web page and documentation of history.
