Comments: I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SETTING UP THIS MOST TERRIFIC PAGE AND BEING ABLE TO HEAR FROM SO MANY EX SHIPMATES AND OTHER PERSONNEL WHO SERVED ABOARD ONE OF THE BEST SHIPS IN THE U S NAVY. I CAN SAY I WAS PROUD TO HAVE SERVED ON THE GURKE AND ALL THE MEN I SERVED ALONGSIDE OF. A LOT OF US YOUNG BOYS BECAME MEN,CLOSE FREINDS, AND STOOD UP FOR WHAT WE BELEIVED IN. OUR OFFICERS WERE THE BEST AND UNDERSTANDING. I WISH GOOD HEALTH, MANY YEARS OF HAPPINESS, FUN,AND PROSPERITY TO EACH AND EVERYONE THAT SERVED ON BOARD THE GURKE DD 783.

Years aboard Gurke: 1970-1972
Comments: The Gurke was without a doubt the finest and most enjoyable duty I had during my four and one-half years in the Navy. I served on the USS Galveston-CLG3 (1968-early 1970) until it was decommissioned. Also , on the Herbert J. Thomas-DD833 ( early 1970 till late 1970) All I did was decommission that one. Then it was on to the greatest little tin-can in the fleet.

Comments: I was aboard for Operation Dominic. Crossed the Equator more times than I can count. I was aslo on board during the Christmas Island and watched a couple of those Atomic,s go off in the early morning. A sight I will never forget. I was in the ET gang at that time an ETN3. It was the greatest bunch of people if ever served with. I have the cruse book for that cruse. It is full of great pictures and information. If anyone wants me to email pictures just let me know. Aslo did a whole bunch of Formosa patrol duty of the coast of China. It was great to run into this site. Hope to hear from some of the group that were aboard then.

Comments: I was aboard through the end of FRAM in Bremerton, Washington and after the West Pac cruise in 1964 and 1965-----I did a swap with and East Coast sonarman at our expense. I attended the Gurke reunion in New Orleans and have fond memories. I have never been lucky enough to find any other sonarmen that were aboard with me. I remember a few last names----Swartz--Wilmont--Kapiwiki---Haggerman----Crosby. Sure wish I could find them.

Comments: IC Electrician with Clyde R. (Dave) Davis, Gary Guy, Rod Koberstein and Colley Dog and Ken Berger from FTG that we all shared room with. Love to hear from anybody still out there and kicking.

Great site, love the pictures. I've told my wife for over 30 years about how Lt Mike Florio married the Italian consulate girl in Hong Kong and now I've got proof. I believe that she thought it was just a Sea Story. Any one know how to get ahold of him. Ltjg Michael C. Florio, He was on ship when I arrived and scheduled to leave just a short time after I left in Dec-66. I have looked for something for many a year to keep track of my old friends and this is great. You can bet that everyone that I can remember will soon get an e-mail or snail mail from me. Anyone who remember's me and I forgot your name, write, I'd like to chat and catch up!!!!
