Comments: The Gurke was the first ship I served aboard. I loved even minute of that tour of
duty. There were some swell men aboard her, some of them I had the pleasure of
serving with again onboard the USS Gilmore AS-16.

Comments: Just stumbled onto this great site by accident. I served as Comm Officer
under CDR Joe Wilson and, later, Jack Murphy. Brings back many memories
-- chasing and being chased by North Vietnamese torpedo boats around North
SAR station before Naval Air sank them -- running aground off Point Loma --
RM2 Tilton trying to swim back to the ship in Zamboanga -- the ship's party
where my SM2 sucker-punched the shore patrol officer -- the hull painting
incident when two misguided Gurke officers surreptitiously painted
"GURKE" on the stern of a DD tied up next to us, and the flap that resulted
when they retaliated -- LCDR Don Babcock's famous farewell speech at
CAPT Wilson's farewell party in Hong Kong -- the mandatory WESTPAC
mustaches -- the "Liar's Dice" box that "George Ensign" always had to carry
to the O Club -- the $1,000 ship's lottery (won by the Engineering Officer) --
and many memorable officers and enlisted men. After leaving Gurke I
received my long-awaited transfer to the Naval Security Group and retired in
1974.
