Years aboard Gurke: 1969-1971
Comments: I reported aboard Gurke as a Fire Control SA, early in January, 1969 and was honorably discharged in
June of 1977. I will always remember all of the first impressions I had as a young seaman
apprentice during my first cruise aboard Gurke. You know, Pearl Harbor and the
Arizona Monument, Waikiki Beach, and who can forget those first "whiffs" of
Subic Bay. I would not trade a moment of my time aboard Gurke.

Years aboard Gurke: None
Comments: Mr. Cheatum: Thank you for the tribute to my uncle, Pfc. Henry Gurke, and for
this wonderful website. I've enjoyed reading the guest log. I've been privileged to
have visited the USS GURKE twice: once in June 1965 (dinner/tour) when the ship
was at the Todd Shipyard in Seattle, WA, and then to attend the decommissioning
ceremony in San Diego, CA. Both visits were very memorable for me. In July
2002, while visiting relatives in Neche, ND (Henry's hometown as well as mine for
a short time), my husband and I stayed at the Icelandic State Park in nearby
Cavalier, ND. Imagine my surprise when we checked in at the office and found
newspaper articles and pictures of my grandmother and aunt on the wall, as well
as some USS GURKE memorabilia and the ship's bell on display! (For the 4th of
July celebration.) To all of you who have served aboard USS GURKE: "THANK
YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY." Vi (Gurke) Depriest

Where are you from?: Lebanon, Oregon
Years aboard Gurke: 1963-67
Comments: I'm actually the daughter of EMC Marshall Walton. Dad retired March 1, 1967. I
have several memories of visiting the ship and watching movies (So Big) in the
Chief's Mess. Dad is alive and well. I too served in the Navy, and have now been
Scouting (BSA) for over 13 years. There's just something about wearing a uniform
that shows pride in being an american.

Where are you from?: Ludington, MI
Years aboard Gurke: 1958-1959
Comments: I was on the Gurke for only one year, taking a discharge to get off the old girl during
a yard overhaul at TI. Capt {Snake} Edgerton was our skipper, known for his pet
snake that the SM's and QM's had to maintain in an old wooden box. I have fond
memories of that darn snake getting loose and escaping down the speaking tubes to
pop out and scaring the hell out of some radioman or someone down in CIC.
