Comments: IC1, E Division - When word came down about the deactivation of the Gurke and return to the U.S. I decided to stay in Japan and was transfered to the OKC. From the OKC I was transfered to the USS Thomaston LSD-28 in Seattle during overhaul shorly there after I was assigned shore duty in Bremerton with Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility. While there and before the sale to the Greeks DD783 made a short stop in Bremerton at our facility man what a change. She was still the fastest in her class.

Comments: My Father, George Jr. McGowan, served aboard the USS Gurke in 1958 as a Yeoman. As a young boy I remember going out to the Gurke on a visit while we were stationed in San Diego back in 1958. Dad spent almost a year on this destroyer and I will never forget it. Dad retired out of the Navy in 1967 as a YNC. He passed away in 1992.
